If you follow decentralised finance (DeFi), you’ll see one number everywhere: TVL, or Total Value Locked. It’s treated as the headline measure of how big a chain or protocol is. Here’s what it actually counts — and the traps in reading it.
What TVL measures
Total Value Locked is the total worth of all the crypto assets currently deposited into a DeFi protocol — or across a whole blockchain.
When you lend coins on a lending protocol, provide liquidity to a decentralised exchange, or stake into a yield product, those assets are “locked” in the protocol’s smart contracts. Add it all up and you get TVL. A chain’s TVL is the sum across every protocol running on it.
Why it’s used
TVL caught on because it’s a quick proxy for traction:
- Adoption. More capital deposited suggests more people are actually using the protocol, not just talking about it.
- Comparison. It gives a rough apples-to-apples way to rank chains and protocols by size.
- Trend. Rising TVL over time hints at growing use; a sharp drop can flag users pulling capital out.
The traps in reading it
TVL is useful, but it’s easy to over-trust. Watch for these:
- It moves with price. If the deposited assets rise in value, TVL goes up even if not a single new coin was added. A lot of “TVL growth” is really just the market going up.
- Double-counting. Deposit a coin, receive a token for it, then deposit that somewhere else, and the same underlying value can be counted twice across protocols.
- Mercenary capital. High rewards can attract deposits that leave the moment the incentives stop — TVL that looks like loyalty but is really just chasing yield.
- It isn’t revenue. A big TVL doesn’t mean a protocol earns much. Value parked is not the same as value generated.
What to watch
Read TVL as a trend in context, not a trophy. Is it growing while prices are flat (real inflows) or only because the market rallied? Is it sticky or incentive-driven? Pair it with the broader picture and it tells you where capital is actually flowing across DeFi — which is useful context, not a verdict.

TVL is the total value deposited into a protocol or chain — a handy proxy for adoption and a quick way to compare size. But it rises with prices, can be double-counted, and says nothing about revenue, so treat the trend and the context as the signal, never the headline number alone.
